Craft For: Expression

"If writers express themselves through words, designers express themselves through their creations." Instead of relying on language, Pearl finds it easier to convey her thoughts and feelings through visual effects. She channels her hopes, emotions, and understanding of beauty into her jewellery creations, using the art of metalwork to express her unique aesthetic.

What do you "Craft for"?

"Relying on personal intuition and experience, I blend some of the beauty and tactile sensations I've encountered, patiently contemplating and materializing concepts to give the work a sense of vitality.

Sometimes, the visual effect cannot be described in words; it’s more about leaving an impression in the viewer's mind, allowing them to grasp the essence through details and feel it through touch, experiencing the content of the work and the designer's story in this way."

How did you get into the jewellery industry and why?

"During my studies in Hong Kong, I was exposed to metal craftsmanship, slowly building my own concepts and finding it interesting to materialize them.

During my exchange in Europe, I experienced the diversity of materials, techniques, and concepts, realizing that the possibilities of jewellery design extend beyond the jewellery seen in Hong Kong, which sparked my desire to have my own studio to explore different possibilities."
- Pearl Lee

Being in Hong Kong, what benefits and difficulties have you had a jeweller?

"An advantage, as an independent designer, I can experiment with various themes to create interesting pieces and be more flexible in meeting clients' needs.

In terms of the challenges, In Hong Kong's jewelry industry, it is often more difficult to find suitable channels to showcase designs that differ from mainstream aesthetics. Although it takes more time and effort to find appropriate means to gradually help the public accept these non-mainstream pieces."

「如果作家是用文字表達自己,那設計師就是用作品表達自己。」

Pearl's interest in jewellery design began to blossom in 2015 when she studied abroad as an exchange student at the Royal Danish Academy. She later graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in Metalwork and Jewellery Design.

Drawing upon her personal sense of beauty and experiences, Pearl brings her emotions and concepts to life in her creations, infusing them with vitality. She invites viewers to appreciate her work by delving into the details and experiencing the stories of both the artwork and the designer through sense of touch.
