Craft For: Art

"Creating art is a process of self-realisation." Juniper's artistic journey begins within, focusing on expressing artistry in its purest form. By honing her craftsmanship, aesthetic sensibility, and critical thinking through her work, she shapes her own identity. Just as every individual resembles a tree, perfecting oneself allows for a greater contribution to the growth of the forest as a whole.

How did you get into the jewellery industry and why?

"I don't think I'm fully part of any specific field. Consequently, I find my role situated within the intersections of the cultural and creative industries, the contemporary art sector, and the jewellery manufactory industry. I realize I can't fit into the center of any industry, only on the edges. But that’s likely what draws me in. Being on the margins potentially allows for breaking boundaries, and as artists, many of us naturally resist being confined to one category.

Regarding the industrialization of jewellery art, if we truly view "Jewellery is Art" in conceptual level, it should align more closely with the mechanical aspects of the contemporary art world."

What motivates you to persevere in this industry in Hong Kong?

"The main motivation might be my long-held dream. Like many in Hong Kong, most of us noticed that the arts scene here has become increasingly lively over the past decade. I believe that with better promotion, Hong Kong has the potential to transform into a cultural hub of Asia, despite its previous characterization as a cultural desert.

However, as a jewellery artist, I see a shortage of skilled practitioners. In the future, I hope to see not just talented artists and exhibitions, but also
innovative jewellery art fairs that stand out from traditional ones, including a special jewellery gallery at Art Basel HK, which would be a remarkable addition. This could help promote private collections, museums, and auctions, aligning with the community's focus on contemporary art.

The key to this is nurturing talent, which needs more effort and government support. With time, we can create a thriving cycle of jewellery art and culture. I've actually, witnessed in Munich, Germany, how effective this approach can be. The annual Frame Contemporary Crafts Fair in March, along with its special Schmuck (jewellery in German) show, gathers top talents in jewellery and boosts confidence in the industry.

After all, jewellery is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of art in human history."

Do you have a message you would like to tell the public through this event?

"I have always stated that jewellery does not hold a central role in my life. My primary interest lies in the daily practice of artistic creation and critical analysis, with jewellery acting as one of the mediums through which I express myself at this moment. Therefore, I do not consider myself a jeweler; instead, I identify as a sculptor and writer, with aspirations to become a professional art critic and translator.

I am particularly intrigued by the implications of the English word "sculpture," which resonates closely with the German term "plastik," a concept famously employed by Joseph
Beuys in his idea of "Soziale Plastik." While I do not seek to shape society, as that is beyond my reach, I aim to utilize the power of art to further develop my own identity, starting with the individual. I describe this as a self-individuation process.

Those familiar with psychology will recognize that I draw inspiration from Carl Jung's theories. It is not surprising that I am fascinated by his assertion that the purpose of life is to nurture the diversity, coherence, and harmony of one's personality to the fullest degree, rooted in the integrity of the self - a journey of individuation.

At present, my investigation into jewellery and expanded media has revealed certain approaches and possibilities for understanding the true essence of the individual."
